Oct 10,  · Simply put, the tuning and warming up of an orchestra is the best sound in the world. It is my favorite part of any concert. This recording captures the 5/5(1).

May 28,  · The ‘warm-up’ is actually the players making sure they are all tuned the same way. Each orchestra has a different way of doing it, but often it goes like this: The oboe plays a specific pitch of the note A. The lead violin quickly checks he is in tune, then allows the different parts of the woodwind and brass to make sure their A matches.

Is there a proper name for when an orchestra "tunes" before a concert? You've heard it before, when a violin sets of a generally one-note tuning session right before a big show. Usually everyone chymes in until the conductor gets fed up and taps his baton three or four times to start the show. posted by omidius to Media & Arts (24 answers total).

The concert master (a violinist) walks onto the podium and asks the woodwinds to play an A and the woodwinds tune to that A. Then the same occurs with the brass. After both are tuned, the woodwinds give another A from which the concert master makes sure his instrument is tuned and after a few moments the whole orchestra tunes to his/her A.
