The White Horse of Uffington symbolically represents defiance against the pagans, be they “great, beautiful, half-witted men from the sunrise and the sea” or – as in the final pages – new barbarians where “books be all their learning and ink be on their hands”.

Mar 30,  · The Uffington Horse is also surrounded by Neolithic and Bronze Age burial mounds. It is only km from the Neolithic Chambered long barrow of Wayland’s Smithy and not far from the Bronze Age cemetery of Lambourn Seven Barrows. The carving has been placed in such a way as to make it extremely difficult to see from close quarters, and like many geoglyphs it is best appreciated from the air.

Uffington is large village and civil parish in the Vale of the White Horse and on the Berkshire Downs. The name comes from Uffa/Offa, king of Mercia and Wessex. Like its neighbours, it is long and thin in shape. It is crossed by the Ridgeway and the Portway or Icknield Street.

How to See The Uffington White Horse. The horse is located beside the Ridgeway, an ancient long distance footpath that runs along the top of the North Berkshire Downs in Oxfordshire. You can access White Horse Hill from a National Trust pay and display parking lot nearby.

The figure is situated on the upper slopes of White Horse Hill in the English civil parish of Uffington (in the ceremonial county of Oxfordshire and historic county of Berkshire), some 10 mi (16 km) east of Swindon, 8 km (5 mi) south of the town of Faringdon and a similar distance west of the town of Wantage; or km ( mi) south of Uffington.

Jun 10,  · Pollard, J. The Uffington White Horse geoglyph as sun-horse, Antiquity 91, – Both of the articles above suggest that the Uffington Horse was a representation of the Sun Horse, which NW Europeans of the Iron Age believed dragged the sun around the sky.
